Getting Started

Welcome to the Dalhousie Department of Bioethics' Ethics Consultation Simulation! In an ethics consultation, it is rarely a straightforward journey from request through to evaluation as there are many decisions made in the course of a single consult. This resource aims to capture that experience more accurately through the use of a Choose Your Own Adventure(™)-style branching framework. Although the choices presented in these cases reflect only a small subset of the possible outcomes, they nonetheless help to demonstrate why there are a range of answers in any given case to the question, “What should we do?” With the help of ethicists and healthcare providers across Canada, we developed this interactive resource to help users (a) understand the ethics consultation process and (b) build confidence and capacity in ethics consultation. Using the Interactive Content To get started, use the menu bar on the top right to navigate through the website. Under "Content," you will find a list of cases to explore. When you click on...

About

About Us The focus of work in the Dalhousie Department of Bioethics is ethics in and of healthcare practice.  This translates into a strong commitment to education of learners in the health professions as well as a series of collaborations with health care organizations that are aimed at (1) enhancing the capacity and confidence of health care providers as they address the ethics questions they encounter in their everyday practice and (2) providing a consistent approach to addressing ethical questions in health care in Nova Scotia. In the course of doing our work, we realized that there wasn’t a resource available that captured the key insights that we have gained in the course of teaching medical, nursing, and social work students as well as adult learners across the the health professions.  This reflects some of our learning and we hope that it also provides opportunities for further discussion and evaluation of ethics consultation approaches and processes. This resource was developed to support work...

About the Project

Welcome to the Dalhousie University Department of Bioethics’ ethics consultation simulation, which seeks to build both (a) understanding of the ethics consultation process and (b) capacity and confidence in approaching ethics consultation as a consultant. This project was born out of our work in the Department providing ethics support to health care organizations in Nova Scotia as well as in working with health professions learners at various points in their training. The goal is to model the thinking, analysis, and decision making that goes on in the consultation process such that others who are not practicing healthcare ethicists are able to both appreciate the skill involved and envision engaging in the process themselves. Some of the basic assumptions about ethics underlying the approach in these cases are (1) that questions of ethics are fundamentally about how we treat each other, whether directly or indirectly, (2) these questions can only be answered with reference to values, and (3) that deliberation regarding ethics is...
